La problématique de la recherche concerne la démocratie : est-elle toujours bonne ou si elle ne l’est qu’à certaines conditions ? Pour répondre, l'auteur s'interroge sur les formes de participation, d'une part et celle de représentation, d'autre part. Il propose finalement une démocratie figurative et une démocratie abstraite, à l'instar de l'art pictural. Dans la première, la représentation donne à ce qui en manquent un visage, une présence où tous les citoyens ou sujets se reconnaissent ou peuvent se reconnaître. Dans la seconde, la représentation prend la place des présents, les chasses, et les oblige à se reconnaître dans des abstractions.
The issue of research is about democracy: Is it always good or it is good only under certain conditions? For answering to this question, the author asks more questions on forms of participation on one hand, and on representation, on the other. It finally proposes figurative democracy and abstract democracy, like in painting. In a figurative democracy, representation gives to s/he who lacks a face, a presence that all citizens or subjects can recognize or identify. In abstract democracy, the representation takes the place of those who are present, hunts and obliges them to recognize themselves in abstractions.
